Statistics show that derailments/accidents decrease with decreased speed.
The DOT and the railroad industry has voluntarily decided to reduce the speed of oil trains to 40 mph through urban areas when trains are carrying 20 or more oil-carrying tank cars.
CARS believes this is not enough.
Besides urban areas, there are many environmentally sensitive areas that are just as important as urban areas.
CARS is pushing for mandatory regulation that would limit the speed of all trains carrying any number of pre-CPC-1232, DOT-111 tank cars carrying hazardous materials to 25 mph . Newer cars (CPC-1232 compliant) should be limited to 40 mph across the U.S.
